CELILO VINEYARD
Celilo Vineyards was planted on Underwood Mountain in 1972, most vines are 40 years old. The deep-rooted vines bring a mineral characteristic to Celilo's wines along with higher acidity. At an elevation 800 to 1100 feet, the vineyard is considered sub-alpine, sitting on a cusp of wetter maritime weather to the west and the desert to the east. Annual rainfall of 50 inches percolates into the vineyard's grainy "buckshot" sized volcanic loam. Soils from the extinct volcano cone of Underwood Mountain can be as deep as 45 feet and retain moisture well, allowing Celilo Vineyards to survive without irrigation. Due to the soil, the flavors that come through the grapes is "minerally" and intense. Today Celilo Vineyards encompasses 74 acres of wine grapes, growing: Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Gruner Veltliner, Lemberger, Muller-Thurgau.

The majestic, south-facing site slopes towards Mt. Hood, the volcanic soil from Mount Adams and the temperate breezes from the Columbia River Gorge make this a special place for growing wine grapes. The deep winter rains from the Cascade Mountain range fortify the volcanic soil with moisture for bud break and berry set while the hot dry summers allow for berries with rich and complex flavors from the deep volcanic soil.

The diversity of land in the Columbia Gorge creates a situation where it is possible to grow almost any grape imaginable. The Hiyu property is divided into half-acre blocks, each planted to a field blend from a different moment in the genetic history of the grapevine. There are over 80 different varieties of grapes and many more clonal selections planted on the farm. Our vines are planted in silt loam over basalt on a southeast-facing hillside above the Hood River, just 22 miles from the summit of Mt. Hood. Our wines are shaped by the weather from the mountain and the closest climate analogies can be made with the Savoie, Jura, and Valle d’Aosta. The property is composed of 14 acres of vines, 4 acres of field and pasture, .5 acres of market garden, 4 acres of forest, a pond and the rest is in grounds that are being moved toward food forests. Any control of vegetation is done by the pigs, cows, chicken, ducks and geese that dwell there during different parts of the year. We spray 85% less material than a typical organic or biodynamic vineyard and there is no sulfur used. The primary control of mildew is with cinnamon oil and the other sprays are mixed herbal teas. The plantings have as much biodiversity as the understory. In addition to the grapes we raise animals, grow fruits, nuts in food forests and vegetables in an annual market garden. We also hand-milk cows and goats to make butter and cheese. All of the products are used in our wine tavern experiences.

Planted in 2004 on a high, cobbly terrace overlooking the Columbia River, this terroir is expressed through an array of grape varieties including Cabernet franc, Primitivo, Barbera, Chenin blanc, Gamay noir, Dolcetto, and Sauvignon blanc. Farmed from the soil, up; certified organic. 8 acres presently in vines.

Our 15 acre, certified organic vineyard is set high on the eastern slopes of the White Salmon Valley at 1400’. Facing south towards Mt. Hood, the vineyard is bathed in just enough sun to bring out the spicy, concentrated flavors of classic cool-weather varietals. The oldest planting of Gewürztraminer dates to 1984. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay were planted in 2007-2016. In the Columbia River Gorge, Analemma, Viento, and COR Cellars all produce wine made from our grapes. Fruit from Oak Ridge Vineyard is also featured in wine made by Brooks, Viola, Fausse Piste, Montebruno, Savage Grace & Dowsett Family wineries.
SCORCHED EARTH VINEYARDS
Named for the intense wildfire of 2003 that swept over our irrigated ground and incinerated nearly every plant on dry ground. The headline read “ Vineyard Saved” and the aerial sure looks like the hand of God rested over us on that day.
The Columbia River is a huge moderator for our vineyard. “The best grapes see the River” is the old maxim and every vine has an incredible river and mountain view on Scorched Earth. The nearly constant west winds from Columbia Reach and the sloping southern exposure nestled within a natural rain shadow give us safety from extremes of heat and cold. We can grow the warm varieties of Syrah, Zinfandel, and Grenache because we have the earliest bud break and harvest with ripening numbers that add up to great wine. Windhorse Vineyard (the former Volcano Ridge Vineyard) at 1200’ is planted in soils eked out of ancient volcanic mudflows on steep canyonlands. Integral to the commitment to co-existing in the natural world, Windhorse Vineyard has only 25 acres of grapes on 160 acres of wildland dominated by oak-pine woodland and native grasses and wildflowers; land that will be protected from development. It is certified sustainable by LIVE & Salmon Safe.
